What is Airflow?

One of the best things about vaping is that it is a completely personalised experience. Vaping has been recognised as one of the most useful tools to quitting smoking and new devices are making it easier to customise your device to suit your needs.

Traditional e-cigarettes have a very basic design and limited airflow. The more modern and innovative devices often offer an adjustable airflow option, usually in the form of a slider that will allow you to personalise your vapour production.

By having the option to change your airflow, you can appreciate the changes in cloud and flavour production. Finding an airflow that is right for you might take a while but there is no harm in trying a few options until you find the perfect airflow restriction for your style of vaping.

What Does Airflow Actually Do?

The amount of airflow you allow through your device can ultimately change your vaping experience. The job of airflow in your vape device is to allow air to move freely from the coil to your mouth.

The higher the airflow, the cooler your vape will be. When you allow a maximum airflow through your device, you will receive a smoother and cooler cloud with less flavour. This happens because when you fire your device, the e-liquid will instantly vapourise on the coil. When the vapour contacts the air, it cools down the temperature of your vapour before you inhale. A higher airflow will provide a cooler cloud, but this will reduce the flavour of your vape juice. Although, by increasing your airflow, the amount of e-liquid your kit uses will decrease because it will remain on the coils for longer.

A more restricted airflow will give you more flavour from your e-liquid. This is because less air will contact the coils, the vapour is forced out quicker and it will be warmer. When it is pushed out quicker, the flavour is more intense and the clouds will be smaller.

How Can I Adjust Airflow?

Firstly, you will need a device with the option to customise your airflow. Most box mod kits will be designed with an airflow collar which, when you twist it, allows you to ‘open’ or ‘close’ your e-cigarette’s air holes. These air holes will control the amount of air that is allowed into your vape device when you activate the fire button.

By twisting the airflow collar or pushing the slider (whichever design your device has) you can reduce or increase the size of the hole. A larger hole will give you a greater airflow, a smaller hole will restrict the airflow into your device.

What is the Best Airflow for Mouth to Lung Vaping?

If you are a mouth-to-lung vaper, then you might want to try a narrow airflow. Mouth-to-lung vapers often appreciate a mouthful of vaper and the familiar warm sensation of cigarette smoke. This is the method many switchers use because it replicates a traditional cigarette so well. When vaping mouth-to-lung, adjust your airflow collar to its smallest, most restricted setting.

What is the Best Airflow for Direct-to-Lung Vaping?

If you vape direct-to-lung, then you might want to try an airflow setting just below the largest option. If you go too big, the flavour of your e-liquid will be reduced and you might not get to appreciate the full flavour. Its always a good idea to start in the middle and work your way up until you find a setting for you.

What is the Best Airflow for Cloud Chasing?

If you are a cloud chaser, then you will want to set your airflow to the highest airflow setting as this will produce large clouds. You will miss out on a lot of flavour but that obviously comes second to the spectacle of huge clouds.

Think About Airflow Last:

When trying to get the ‘perfect’ vaping experience, it is very easy to get tied down with all the details because there are so many of them, especially with more advanced vape kits. It is really good advice to sort everything else out first before you think about your airflow. Make sure you find a good e-liquid with a VG:PG ratio you are happy with, a good device, the correct coil resistance, an ideal wattage, your vaping mode and your vaping style, then tackle the airflow. Airflow is the easiest setting to change when you are vaping so sort out the complicated stuff first and then experiment with airflow.
