What is Sub-Ohm Vaping?

Sub-Ohm vaping, also known as sub-ohming refers to vaping an e-cigarette with a coil that has a resistance level below 1 Ohm. ‘Ohm’ is the measure of the resistance coil and the symbol for this is Ω. It is commonly known that the coil in standard e-cigarette kits which are used for mouth-to-lung vaping (MTL) are rated between 1.2Ω to 2.0Ω.

Sub-Ohm Coils

Sub-Ohm kits are more powerful than standard e-cigarette kits due to the resistance of the coil being reduced. Due to the reduced resistance, there is an increase in the electrical current allowing the coil to heat up faster and reach a higher temperature. This produces more robust flavour and generates thick clouds associated with sub-ohm vaping.

 Direct-To-Lung Vaping

Sub-ohming requires you to use a direct-to-lung inhalation (DTL) method. If you’re an ex-smoker, this can take some getting used to as the inhalation method used when smoking traditional cigarettes is mouth-to-lung. Although most sub-ohm kits require a DTL inhalation, there are some kits on the market that will let you choose your own inhalation method.

What Vape Kit Should I Use?

Not all vape kits are suitable for this type of vaping. When looking for a sub-ohm mod they usually fall under two categories, mechanical mods and regulated mods.

Regulated mods have integrated batteries which can be charged via a USB cable, these are the most popular type of sub-ohm device and are used by vapers who are just starting out on their sub-ohm vaping journey.

Mechanical mods are for the more advanced vaper as they require advanced knowledge of battery safety and ohms law. These devices are not regulated and can be extremely dangerous if used incorrectly so you need to ensure you’re educated on this before purchasing or using a mechanical mod.

What E-Liquid Should I Use for Sub-Ohm Vaping?

When looking for an e-liquid to suit your sub-ohm device, e-liquids with a higher VG contribution will work the best due to the thickness of the e-liquid working better with the coil size. High VG e-liquids provide a smoother and more flavoursome vape which is ideal when vaping at higher wattages.

Sub-ohm devices are also compatible with 50/50 e-liquids as these are designed for universal use across all vape devices.
