A vape coil is the heating element inside a vape tank or pod system. It consists of a metal coil wrapped around a wicking material, usually cotton. When the coil is heated by the battery, it vaporises the e-liquid absorbed by the wick, creating vapour.
Coils generally last between 1-3 weeks, depending on factors like wattage, e-liquid type, and usage. Signs that it’s time to replace a coil include a burnt taste, reduced flavour, decreased vapour production, and unusual gurgling sounds.
A burnt taste usually indicates that the coil or wick is dry, overused, or heated at too high a wattage. To prevent this, make sure the coil is primed with e-liquid before use, avoid chain vaping, and stay within the recommended wattage range for your coil.
Standard coils use a single wire wrapped around the wick, while mesh coils use a woven mesh material. Mesh coils provide a larger heating surface, which generally results in better flavour, more vapour production, and longer coil life, making them popular in sub-ohm tanks.
To prime a coil, apply a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the exposed cotton parts of the coil, then fill the tank and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes. This ensures the wick is fully saturated before heating, which helps prevent dry hits and prolongs coil life.
Each coil has a recommended wattage range printed on it. Staying within this range helps avoid burning the coil and ensures optimal flavour and vapour production. Lower wattages typically preserve coil life, while higher wattages produce more vapour but may wear out the coil faster.
Common coil materials include Kanthal, stainless steel, nickel, and titanium. Kanthal is durable and widely used, while stainless steel is favoured for its versatility in both wattage and temperature control modes. Not all coils are compatible with every tank. Most tanks have specific coils designed for them, and it’s essential to use the recommended coils for best performance. Some tanks also offer different coil options, allowing you to choose between MTL and DTL or various resistance levels.
Coil resistance, measured in ohms, affects the vapour production and flavour intensity. Low-resistance coils (sub-ohm, below 1.0 ohms) produce more vapour and are generally used for direct-to-lung (DTL) vaping. High-resistance coils (above 1.0 ohm) provide a tighter draw and are suited for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping.
TC coils, made from materials like nickel, titanium, or stainless steel, allow for temperature control settings, which regulate the coil’s maximum temperature. Temperature control helps prevent dry hits and burnt taste, offering a consistent vaping experience.
Spitback occurs when e-liquid collects on the coil and sputters, causing hot droplets to rise up the drip tip. Prevent this by using the correct wattage, priming the coil carefully, and avoiding overfilling the tank. Some coils are designed with anti-spitback technology to minimise this issue.
This error means the coil’s resistance isn’t compatible with the mod’s settings. Check your device’s minimum and maximum resistance specifications, and make sure the coil is within that range. Cleaning the 510 connections or adjusting the mod settings may also help.
High-resistance coils (1.0 ohm or above) are ideal for nicotine salts, as they produce a smoother draw at lower wattages. MTL tanks with high-resistance coils are generally best for salt nic, as they deliver the right intensity and throat hit without producing excessive vapour.
