How to Store E-Liquids

Once you buy an e-liquid, it’s quite important that you find a safe place to keep it. Unless you use it straight away, we all have a habit of leaving our e-liquid wherever it is most convenient.

This guide will be helpful to keep you and your e-liquid safe once it arrives, especially if you buy a big order to last or even if you make your own juice.

Where you keep your e-liquid can make a difference to the lifespan of your vape juice and that can save you money in the long run and help make the most of your favourite flavours.

Light, Heat & Air

The three villains working against your e-liquid are light, heat and air. One of the best things you can do for your e-liquid is to avoid these ‘elements’ as they can break down your juice and will change the colour and taste of your e-liquid.

  • Light: The UV rays in light can affect the quality of your e-liquid. The UV will warm up your juice and can split the individual ingredients at a molecular level. To prevent this from happening, it is best to keep your e-liquids in a dark place, especially if you are storing them over a long period of time.
  • Heat: Very similar to UV, heat will also break down the ingredients into smaller compounds. This will alter the taste of your juice, but this can be avoided by storing your e-liquid in a cool place.
  • Air: When nicotine reacts with the oxygen in the air, it will react and create cotinine. This will break down the nicotine in your juice. To prevent this, make sure your bottles are airtight and place lids back on your bottles after using.

So, Where Should I Store My E-Liquid?

The best place you can keep your e-liquid to prevent it from spoiling is in a dark, cool place. This will help to protect it from light and heat and will prolong the flavour. When choosing a place to store your e-liquid, make sure it is cool and away from any heat. It’s always a good idea to make sure your lids are sealed tight and as always keep your bottles away from children.

When Will E-Liquid Expire?

The majority of e-liquids will have a shelf life of two years or less. Liquid without nicotine can last longer as it is the nicotine compound that will break down first. Expiry dates are just an estimation and there is no guarantee that the quality of your e-liquid will be the same as when you first purchased it.

All e-liquids and companies have a different expiry date due to their manufacturing processes and ingredients. You can always check the quality of your e-liquid at home by looking out for:

  • Storage: Has your e-liquid been stored incorrectly? Has it been exposed to light, heat, or air? If so, you might notice a change in colour or consistency.
  • Separation: If the ingredients in your e-liquid have separated, give it a shake. If the ingredients don’t mix together again then it might have reached its expiry date.
  • Smell: Out of date e-liquid will often smell bad or different from the original flavour. If in doubt, chuck it out!
