What is E-Liquid?

Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigs, replicate the act of smoking traditional cigarettes but they don’t burn tobacco. Instead, they heat a flavoured e-liquid which in turn creates a flavoured vapour that you can inhale into the lungs. Using an e-cigarette is generally described as ‘vaping’.

E-liquid can also be referred to as e-juice or vape juice but no matter what you call it, it still does the same excellent job of bringing fantastic, vivid flavours to you at the press of a button, or in some devices, it’s as simple as taking a breath.

Some e-liquids contain nicotine, in the UK these nicotine levels are restricted to specific quantities due to TPD regulations. They are also made up of two key ingredients, propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG). The flavour comes from a mix of regulated and TPD approved chemicals to provide you with an array of distinct, familiar flavours.

How is VG and PG Used in E-Liquid?

Propylene Glycol is more commonly used in e-liquids than Vegetable Glycerin and has a thinner consistency. It is also thought to offer a greater flavour intensity than VG. As it has a thinner consistency, it is less likely to clog your atomiser with residue.

On the other hand, Vegetable Glycerin is thicker than PG and because of this, it can sometimes cause problems with clogging in your vape device when you use a VG-based e-liquid. If this is the case, you might need to clean your kit more frequently or use a device that is compatible with a high VG e-liquid. VG is also much sweeter than PG, meaning it can affect the flavour of the e-liquid. VG also provides a thicker vapour density, which means you can create bigger clouds when using a VG based e-liquid compared to the clouds created when vaping a PG based e-juice.

Most e-liquids will provide you with PG/VG content in the form of a ratio.

  • High PG (above 60%) – Strong throat hit and low cloud production
  • 50PG/50VG – Medium throat hit and medium cloud production
  • High VG (above 60%) – Low throat hit and high cloud production

Is There Nicotine in E-Liquid?

There are e-liquids that contain nicotine but not every e-liquid has to contain nicotine.

Nicotine is a very addictive substance which is why it is so heavily regulated. The EU laws which came into place in 2014 restrict the sale and creation of e-liquid products with high levels of nicotine. Depending on your smoking experience, you will need to find an e-liquid with a nicotine level that is ideal for you and your previous smoking experience.

  • 18mg - Heavy smokers who usually smoke more than a pack a day will likely benefit from a higher quantity nicotine level to replicate the amount of nicotine you would usually get from smoking heavily.
  • 12mg- Ideal for if you smoke around a pack a day. A middle of the range 12mg will help to replicate the same levels you are used to receiving from a full pack.
  • 6mg – Light smokers who usually only smoke a few times a day would appreciate a slightly lower quantity of nicotine.
  • 3mg – If you are a social smoker, starting out on the lowest quantity of nicotine content would be a great starting point until you can find your preferred level.
  • 0mg – If you are an ex-smoker or a vaper who has reduced their nicotine content, a 0mg nicotine content e-liquid would give you the same flavour and will replicate the feeling of smoking a traditional cigarette without the potentially harmful side effects.

Once you have found a nicotine level that appeals to your vaping preferences, you can gradually lower your nicotine content until you reach a 0mg e-liquid. The majority of flavours cover strengths of 0mg-18mg, so you are sure to find a flavour and nicotine content that suits your vaping preferences.

What Are Nic Salts?

For some smokers, the nicotine levels in regular e-liquid bottles aren’t enough and so the answer lies in Nic Salts.

Nic salts are the exact same form of nicotine that you would find in tobacco and although it may be addictive, nicotine on its own doesn’t carry the toxins and harmful nasties found in traditional tobacco.

It has a better absorption rate which means you can expect to receive a smoother and stronger hit of nicotine that will last longer. The nicotine in nic salts is better absorbed into the bloodstream, this is because the salts change the PH level of liquid which is more compatible with human physiology and allows a more effective absorption.
