E-Cigarette Battery Care

Most e-cigarette devices are powered by an internal or external battery. Sometimes these are rechargeable, other times they are fixed in the device and won’t recharge, this is the case in most disposables.

E-cigarettes are designed to be used all day, every day, and so they need house batteries that can manage with high levels of power output and usage.

It is very important that you take care of your battery and use compatible products as these can become dangerous if they are damaged or mistreated.

Internal Vape Batteries:

Internal batteries are e-cigarettes that have a built-in battery. This is often charged via a USB cable.

It can often be hard to identify if an internal battery has been damaged. If you drop the device, you could cause internal damage that you won’t be able to see. This could cause the device to malfunction and could be potentially dangerous. It is always a good idea to have your device checked by a professional if you think your internal battery might be damaged.

To protect your internal battery, you should always store your e-cigarette in a cool, dry place as high temperatures could affect the performance of your battery.

For safety reasons, you should never leave your e-cigarette charging unattended or left charging on a combustible surface. Devices can overheat which could lead to a fire. It is also really important that you use a compatible and trusted charging cable. It is always best to use the lead that arrived with your device or buy a trusted cable from an official brand. Using cheaper chargers can cost you a lot more in the long run.

One downside to built-in batteries is that if they do get damaged, the entire device will stop working which means you will have to replace the entire device rather than just the battery.

However, these e-cigarettes are incredibly useful for vapers that want a simple vaping experience. They are also helpful for those who have just made the switch from smoking as they offer a simple experience if you haven’t fully delved into the world of vaping yet. If you take care of your device, theoretically, it could last for a number of years.

External Batteries

Most advanced e-cigarette kits are powered by an external battery and these can be removed easily and replaced. One of the most common types of batteries used in e-cigarettes is the 18650 which releases a high amount of power. These are generally used for more advanced, high-functioning devices with more customisable features.

Because they have a higher power output, they can pose a severe risk if they are used incorrectly, they can catch fire, leak flammable liquid and at the worst explode if they are mishandled.

It is always a good idea to regularly check your external batteries for general wear and tear. If the PVC wrapper is broken or cracked, then you will need to dispose of your battery safely. If the battery itself is broken or punctured, then there is a risk of flammable gas being leaked. To reduce wear and tear on your external batteries, you should store them in a cool, dry place and preferably in a protective battery case.

It is important that you don’t leave batteries loose in your pocket or bag as they could collide with other items such as keys and this could result in your battery short-circuiting. Plus, if they are bashed around or pick up dust the current could be interrupted and will affect the overall performance of the battery.

Certain e-cigarette devices use lithium-ion batteries. These will carry an unbelievable amount of power but are high risk due to the chemicals used. If these batteries short-circuit, then the current will continue to flow but will produce heat and damages the insulation. If the batteries get too hot, then they can leak flammable liquid and become at risk of exploding.

These incidents are very rare and typically only happen to those who fail to store their batteries safely or use incompatible batteries and chargers with their vape kits.

Mods have also been developed over the years to include more built-in safety features including overcharge and short-circuit protection.

Battery Care In A Nutshell:

  • Turn off your device when you are not using it. This will prevent the de3vice from accidentally firing in your bag or pocket.
  • Only use batteries from a reputable source that have the correct CE logo.
  • Don’t mix your battery brands as they might have different power outputs.
  • Only use chargers that match the device brand or arrived with your kit to ensure that your device is being charged safely.
  • Don’t charge your battery overnight, leave it unattended or charge your kit on a flammable service.
  • Store batteries in a battery case and keep them in a cool, dry place.
  • Regularly clean batteries to ensure they don’t get contaminated with dust or fluff.
  • Replace batteries every one to two years.
  • Be wary of drops and damage to your device, get your device checked by a professional if you are unsure.

Taking care of your battery is a very important aspect of vaping because the potential risks can be very dangerous. Keeping them safe not only keeps you safe but will prolong the lifespan of your device.
